Steelers named 'top landing spot' for former DPOY

The 2024 NFL Draft is over, meaning teams will have to return to the free-agent market to complete their rosters.

There isn't a ton of talent remaining, but there are some players who could contribute early and often in 2024.

One of those players is veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore, and Pro Football Focus' Gordon McGuinness named the Steelers a "top landing spot" for the 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

"Gilmore will turn 34 at the start of the 2024 season but has performed well in three one-year stints with different teams since 2022," McGuinness writes. "The Steelers played Cover 1 on 25.8% of passing downs last season, with the Cowboys one of just five teams to do so at a higher rate, and still have a need at cornerback."

Pittsburgh already traded for former Panthers cornerback Donte Jackson in March, but it could use another capable starter like Gilmore.

If Jackson or second-year cornerback Joey Porter Jr. were to get injured, the team would be forced to start one of the unproven talents of Cory Trice Jr. (2023 seventh-round pick), Darius Rush (Colts' 2023 fifth-round pick) or Ryan Watts (2024 sixth-round pick).

Gilmore would instantly upgrade the room and provide it with much-needed depth. He may be 33, but he proved to have plenty of gas left in the tank last season, registering 68 tackles, one forced fumble, two interceptions and 13 passes defensed with the Cowboys.

Money shouldn't be a problem for the Steelers either as they have $18.345 million in cap space, per Over The Cap.

Of course, Pittsburgh must sign its 2024 NFL Draft class, but Gilmore is expected to receive a one-year, $9 million deal, which would leave the team with enough funds.

The Steelers and Gilmore likely have Super Bowl aspirations in 2024. Maybe teaming up would help propel them to a championship.
